Board consulting

The first line of defence.Judgement in the room, before it is needed.

Sentinel68 works alongside chairs, principals and partners on the decisions that do not fit a workstream: succession, governance under pressure, and the quiet questions asked between meetings.

The position

Most boards do not lack information. They lack somebody outside the reporting line who can say the unwelcome thing early.

We are engaged directly by the chair, the principal or the investing partner. That means no matrix, no internal politics to manage, and no incentive to prolong the work. Engagements are scoped to a decision and closed when the decision is made.

The founder is legally trained and brings that discipline inside the business — how obligations are actually created, where liability accumulates, how a record reads two years later. Sentinel68 is not a law firm and does not give formal legal advice; when advice is required, we help you instruct it well.

Engagements

Three ways the work usually starts.

  • Board effectiveness and governance

A candid read on how your board actually decides, and what to change before the next difficult item reaches the agenda.

    • Composition, succession and chair-to-executive dynamics
    • Committee terms of reference and information flow
    • Observation of live meetings, with a private written read
  • Non-executive and advisory seats

Sitting on the board, or beside it, for a defined term where an additional independent voice changes the quality of debate.

    • Non-executive director and board adviser appointments
    • Investor-nominated seats held with genuine independence
    • Interim chairing of committees during transition
  • Situations and transitions

Discreet support through the periods a company does not put in its annual report.

    • Founder transition, exits and generational handover
    • Governance of an investigation or contested departure
    • Preparing a board for diligence, funding or sale

Who we work with

A small number of relationships, held for a long time.

Company chairs

Private and listed boards where the chair wants an independent read on composition, conduct and the decisions ahead — not a benchmarking exercise.

Family offices

Principals and their advisers navigating governance across generations, where family, ownership and management are not the same three people.

Venture capital investors

Partners who need portfolio boards to function properly, and occasionally need someone in the seat who will report plainly to both sides.

Testimonials

In their words.

“Kevin is our first line of defence. He helps us understand what a contract really means for the business, which points are worth fighting for, and when we need to bring in our lawyers. When we do, the instruction is clear and focused, and we spend far less on outside fees.”
Tony BrookChief Executive, Specialist Network Operations

David ButtManaging Partner, Marshall Street Advisers
